What do you think the word ‘metabolism’ means? It’s a word that seems to have developed a handful of meanings in recent years.

The body’s basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the amount of energy the body needs to function at rest. BMR accounts for around 65-70% of a ‘normal’ person’s total energy expenditure (TEE), with the rest being made up from energy used performing everyday activities and exercise. Obviously, for those who go to the gym, this ratio is closer to 50/50. BMR varies from person to person and is affected by a number of factors.

  • Body composition. Fat doesn’t directly consume energy, like muscle does, so those with more muscular physiques will have a relatively higher BMR.
  • Due for the most part to the factor above, men have a higher BMR than women by around 10-15%. The female menstrual cycle can also cause slight differences.
  • Body area and weight. This is an obvious one. The bigger you are, the higher your BMR will be.
  • Body temperature. Internal temperature speeds up reactions and uses more energy.
  • Different foods and supplements can affect BMR. For instance, hot foods containing chilies or capsaicin can up body temperature and increase BMR. Low-calorie diets can lower BMR, especially those incorporating long periods of starvation. The body isn’t silly, if it is being starved, it will conserve energy.
  • External temperature. The body is always striving to maintain an equilibrium. It will keep core temperature as regular as possible, and this requires energy. So, the larger the distance the external temperature is from optimum, whether that be hot or cold, the more work the body has to do.
  • Body chemistry. Hormones play a huge part in the regulation of metabolism. The thyroid hormones, in particular, can massively alter BMR.
  • Exercise boosts BMR. It does this by speeding up the systems within the body and placing more demand on these systems. It also creates more muscle mass and blood vessels, which consume energy.
